This is how I was taught to keep track of the center seam at least in the early stages. Cut off the inside corners of one of the two plates before joining them. The points of the notches you get after joining the plates are exactly on the seam and make it easy to draw your center line.

I had been using the "nails on a panel" technique (there has to be a better name for it) with mixed results. This discussion has inspired me to order the jig from LMI. HATE the $60 shipping fee though. Yes, that was whining. LMI, if you are listening please follow what StewMac seems to have done and introduce a cheaper shipping option.

Doug, I bet you'll be happy with the LMI fixture but the almost 50% extra for shipping to Canada sure sucks.

The common cause of poor results can be hitting the side nails too high. Have you been hitting them as low as possible? The hammer should make contact with the panel.
